The silver nitrate will simply just dissolve in the water BUT if you have any kind of chemicals in the water it can potentially cause a reaction to occur.

If you mix AgNO3 with distilled water you have a solution of AgNO3. The AgNO3 is very soluble in water. But if you use drinking water, it has chlorides, and then will precipitate AgCl (white salt, not soluble in water)
