x = -3 , y =8 
Plug in the variables 
5(-3) + b(8) = 17
-15 + 8b = 17
     Add 15 to both sides of the equation. By doing this, you can eliminate the 15 on the left side. 
8b = 17 + 15
8b = 32 
   Divide 8 on both sides 
b = 4
