The carbon atom is uniquely suited to building large molecules primarily because of its valence electron count of 4 - which means it can bound up to 4 atoms (single bonds) simultaneously. Also, it has a relatively low molecular weight and the best part is that it forms covalent bonds (stable, high energy bonds) with other, non-metallic atoms.
