There are many factors that may increase the risk for developing borderline personality disorder. Borderline personality disorder has been show to be hereditary, so a person may have a higher risk of developing it if a close relative like a parent or grandparent has been diagnosed with the same or a similar disorder. A history of abuse, neglect, or an otherwise stressful childhood has also been shown to put a person at a higher risk for developing borderline personality disorder.
