Do you think that punishments like prison sentences or fines help stop crime? Why or why not?

I believe they do help stop crime, first off, putting some in jail has already stopped some future crime. Fines just keep people safe. Putting someone in Jail for a certain amount of time shows them that if you get caught doing on of these crimes, its not fun, and they sometimes realize it was a high risk play.
