What role did the founders foresee for religion in american government and society?

The founders felt that the state and church should be separate rather than having the church play a role in the state. This can be seen in the First Amendment as the freedom to practice any religion was allowed. If Church was a part of the state the founders felt it would interfere with the ongoing government proceedings.
