Traditionally, Japanese emperors were viewed as descendants from the kami (spirits). They were particularly believed to be direct descendants of Amaterasu, who is the goddess of the sun and the universe in the Shinto religion.

The Japanese emperors were not worshiped as gods, but were believed to be given the mandate to carry out certain rituals and devotions to ensure that the kami look after Japan and ensure her prosperity.
