An independent variable will be in anything you are looking at that will depend or vary based on something else. For example, if you want to see if how much people watch TV depends on different things, your dependent variable will be hours spent watching tv because it depends on what else you are looking at the independent variable in this case would be the variable that causes the difference in tv watching.
