What is the importance of collecting and analysing DNA in murder scenes?

It can be used as evidence during trial, if the DNA from the crime scene matches with those of the suspect. It can also be used to determine if two cases are related by comparing the DNA evidence left in both crime scenes, which can point of if they are done by the same suspect.
