A pidgin is a limited language that develops between two social groups, one of which is more dominant than the other, for communication purposes.
- The pidgin is developed by the less dominant group. Pinggins first appeared in colonial settings where officials, tradespeople, sailors, and other representatives of the specific colonial power interacted with indigenous.
- When speaking with the former, the latter created a jargon. As a result, a language developed based on the relevant colonial language and/or the native language(s).
- Such a language had a narrow range since it had a specific function—basic communication with both the colonists.
