marble is basically metamorphosed limestone. Limestone is a rock that is composed of the mineral calcite. When a drop of dilute hydrochloric acid is placed on this rock, it bubbles and fizzes as carbon dioxide is released. This reaction can occur only when a rock is composed of the mineral calcite.
