In a right triangle, the square of the hypotenuse is equal to the square of one leg plus the square of the other leg.

In math terms, where c is the hypotenuse and a and b are the legs:
[tex]a^{2} + b^{2} = c^{2}[/tex]

This is called the Pythagorean Theorem.
