Suppose tan(b) = -2, and the terminal side of b is located in quadrant II, then  cot(b) = -1/2

Note that:

tan(b) =  Opposite/Adjacent

Comparing the above relationship with tan(b) = -2/1:

Opposite = -2

Adjacent = 1

Also note that:

cot(b) = 1/tan(b)

cot(b) = Adjacent/Opposite

Substitute opposite = -2 and adjacent = 1 into the expression for cot(b)

cot(b) = -1/2
