-5w − 8 = 1 − 2w

It is not. For an equation to be an identity they have to work out to the same  thing on both sides.  like 5 is the same as 1+4 and 2+3.  Here, there's a -8 on one side and a 1 on the other.  There si no way for these to be made the same.  Similarly for the w terms.
