A tariff is a tax imposed by a government on goods and services imported from other countries that serves to increase the price and make imports less desirable and less competitive, versus domestic goods and services. In the late nineteenth century, the United States experienced rapid economic growth and emerged as a world industrial power. The Republicans and the Democrats differed because the Republicans supported high protective tariffs and the Democrats favored low tariffs.
