During the Gilded Age, when factory workers were injured at work, they didn't receive anything. Their families would often starve to death, because they weren't making money to buy food.

During the Gilded Age, a factory worker who was injured while working generally received no pay and no medical benefits from the company in question, since this was before worker safety was a consideration. 

Also, workers had no job security, meaning if they got hurt they were fired.
