Marie Antoinette managed to do that because she had at her disposal the Palace of the Petit Trianon, which was located in the grounds of the Palace of Versailles. Louis XVI gave this small palace to his young wife when he became king in 1774, and she used it throughout her life as a place of retreat and solace. Not even the king was allowed to enter the palace without Marie Antoinette's permission.
