Why is the atomic mass usually given as an average (and a decimal)?

elements exist as isotopes. hydrogen has mostly 1 proton in the nucleus. but deuterium is also hydrogen with 1 neutron, tritium is also hydrogen with two neutrons. the average takes into account the element and its isotopes
